14th Annual Renaissance Polyphony Weekend Dr. William MahrtDr. William Mahrt teaches musicology at Stanford University, where he directs the Stanford Early Music Singers. In addition, he is director of the St. Ann Choir in Palo Alto, CA, which regularly sings Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony in liturgical performance. He is active in the San Francisco Bay Area conducting short-term workshops in the performance of Gregorian chant and Renaissance choral music.Dr. Mahrt's scholarship centers upon the performance of Medieval and Renaissance music and its relation to liturgy and to music theory. He has written on music and liturgy, on music and poetry in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and on the music of Guillaume de Machaut and Johannes Brahms. With his Early Music Singers, Dr. Mahrt has completed a two-year cycle of the complete masses of Josquin Des Prez and has embarked upon a cycle of historical Vespers services.
A member of the editorial board of Sacred Music,
Dr. Mahrt has served as president of the Northern California
chapter of the American Musicological Society.
