Featuring Saskia Coolen and Frances Blaker and Martha Bishop (viols) The Texas Toot, a grass roots early music workshop, turns 27 this year. From its humble but enthusiastic beginnings as a recorder workshop, the Toot has become a workshop with an increasingly wide range of early instruments taught by a faculty of world-class performers and pedagogues. Five years ago, the Toot added to its popular fall weekend workshop schedule by adding a week-long summer workshop and offered the Flanders Recorder Quartet as the core of its faculty for two years. This year we are fortunate to offer the same faculty as last year: Saskia Coolen (the Netherlands) and Frances Blaker (California) proved to be an excellent team in last year's workshop, and we are pleased that they will be captains of the recorder faculty again. Rounding out our diverse and expansive recorder faculty are Sara Funkhouser, Tom Zajac, Jan Jackson, and Frank Shirley. Tom Zajac (Boston) and Sara Funkhouser (Ft. Worth) will also be heading up the ever-popular reed program again. Start cleaning off those krumhorns, cornemusen, and shawms. Last year's viol students were in heaven with Martha Bishop and James Brown leading them. We expect no less this year, and Laurie Young Stevens, Baroque violinist extraordinaire, will be teaching the Violin Band and violin technique. Bruce Brogdon and Becky Baxter return from Houston to teach lute and historical harp, respectively, and Peggy Sexton will return to teach historical percussion. Classes for beginning and intermediate singers will be offered as well. Look at the Faculty and Class sections for faculty bios and lists of classes being offered. The complete class schedule and daily special events will be posted here on the Toot website in early May and will be made available for those without access to the web via US mail, email, or telephone. Our program is open to all, no audition is required (though we will ask you to rank yourself to make our class sorting task easier). We attempt to keep most classes small, and some classes will feature one-on-a-part playing. The Summer Texas Toot is held at Concordia University in Austin, Texas. Concordia is a small university affiliated with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Its lovely tree-filled campus is conveniently located in central Austin with easy access to I-35 and lively downtown Austin, as well as the University of Texas campus. All of the main classroom buildings are air-conditioned as is our lodging in Harms Hall. (We have requested that all of our lodging be in the west wing of the dorm, away from the traffic noise, and Concordia has graciously complied.)
