The Summer Toot is privileged to have a fine faculty of both local and guest instructors. This section gives biographies of all of our faculty members. The Summer Texas Toot reserves the right to modify programs and faculty rosters in response to enrollment, student preferences, and playing levels.

Frances Blaker — Recorders (back to top)

At the Texas Toot Summer 2005, Frances Blaker will be teaching

  1. Advanced recorder consort (pieces from German consort repertoire from the 15th — 17th centuries);
  2. Bach — Art of the Fugue (upper-intermediate — advanced recorder players);
  3. "Renaissance Men: Isaac, Finck, Senfl and Lassus" (intermediate — advanced recorder and viol players and singers; other quiet renaissance instruments also welcome); and
  4. intermediate — upper-intermediate recorder technique.

Saskia Coolen — Recorders (back to top)

At the Texas Toot Summer 2005, Saskia Coolen will be teaching

  1. a master class focusing on the solo repertoire of Telemann; trio sonatas and quartets from the high Baroque;
  2. 'modern' ensemble repertoire; and
  3. arrangements of the Bach Brandenburg Concerti for recorders, for both small and large ensembles.

Martha Bishop — Viols (back to top)

Martha Bishop will be teaching

  1. "Bach for Viols" (intermediate — advanced);
  2. German composers whose names begin with "S": Senfl, Schein, Scheidt, Schütz, Schmeltzer, Simpson (all levels);
  3. in the spirit of diversity, a Jenkins consort class (upper-intermediate — advanced, one per part).

Tom Zajac — Recorders and Reeds (back to top)

At the Texas Toot Summer 2005, Tom Zajac will teach

  1. the ever-popular krumhorn class;
  2. "Tanz und nachtanz: German dance music of the Renaissance" for exposed double reeds;
  3. "Shhhh! Quiet and lovely music of Schütz, Scheidt, Schein and Schmeltzer" for recorders, soft reeds and strings; and
  4. "The Senfl Circle" for recorders, soft reeds, strings, and voices (along with Judith Overcash).

Becky Baxter — Early Harps (back to top)

At the Texas Toot Summer 2005, Becky Baxter will be teaching

  1. "Technique and Fingering for Harp", German music sources from the 1500s and 1600s will be used primarily (all levels and all harps welcome);
  2. "Intabulating Early Music for Harp" using the the Ammerbach Tablaturbuch (1571/1583);
  3. a beginning harp class; and
  4. mixed ensemble for lutes and harps, focusing on 16th c. German ensemble music from Rhau to Praetorius (with Bruce Brogdon).

Bruce Brogdon — Lute (back to top)

At this Summer's Toot, Bruce will offer

  1. beginning/intermediate solo-song class (with Judith Overcash and the lute technique class);
  2. Abel, Telemann and Schenck for bass viols and continuo (intermediate level, solos and duos, with James Brown);
  3. mixed ensemble for lutes and harps, focusing on 16th c. German ensemble music from Rhau to Praetorius (with Becky Baxter).

James Brown — Viols (back to top)

This summer, Mr. Brown will be teaching

  1. technique development for intermediate and advanced viols;
  2. Abel, Telemann and Schenck for bass viols and continuo (intermediate level, solos and duos, with Bruce Brogdon);
  3. a large mixed ensemble class, "Altbachsches and Capricornus", for strings and voices (with Laurie Young Stevens);
  4. beginning or intermediate viol, as needed.

Jan Jackson — Recorders (back to top)

Jan's classes for the Summer Toot 2005 include

  1. Telemann duet repertoire (intermediate level);
  2. a technique class in "teaching yourself without a teacher"; and
  3. 17th century ensemble class ("Schütz and the Other 'S' Guys") for intermediate and upper intermediate levels.

Daniel Johnson — Voice and Workshop Director (back to top)

This summer, Johnson will be teaching

  1. Vocal ensemble: music by Isaac, Senfl, and more (with Judith Overcash)

Keith Womer — Harpsichord (back to top)

This summer, Keith Womer will be teaching

  1. Harpsichord 101 — offered on a contingency basis;
  2. Advanced solo-song class/master class with continuo; Schütz through Bach (with Judith Overcash).

Judith Overcash — Voice and Ensemble (back to top)

This summer, Judith will be teaching

  1. beginning/intermediate solo-song class, Senfl through Schütz (with Bruce Brogdon);
  2. advanced solo-song class/master class, Schütz through Bach (with Keith Womer);
  3. "The Senfl Circle" for recorders, soft reeds, strings, and voices (along with Tom Zajac);
  4. Vocal ensemble: music by Isaac, Senfl, and more (with Danny Johnson).

Frank Shirley — recorder (back to top)

Frank Shirley will be teaching

  1. "German Contrapuntalists of the late Baroque: Bach, Buxtehude and More", for recorders; and
  2. "German Music from the times of Lasso to Praetorius" for recorders.

Laurie Young Stevens — violin (back to top)

Laurie will be teaching at the Summer 2005 Toot:

  1. the wildly popular violin band (viols, too);
  2. a class on practice techniques for technical problems, division playing and ornaments;
  3. violin duets (Telemann, etc.);
  4. a large mixed ensemble class, "Altbachsches and Capricornus", for strings and voices (with James Brown);
